Before having acupuncture treatment
Many acupuncture points are on the lower arms and legs, so it is helpful to wear loose clothing. Make sure you eat a light meal before treatment.
Your first consultation
In order to make a diagnosis and to find the right treatment approach, we ask patients about current symptoms, medical history, sleep, appetite and digestion, emotional wellbeing and other specific details as appropriate.
Very fine single-use pre-sterilised needles are used to stimulate specific acupuncture points. Energy meridians range across the whole body, so these points may not be close to where you experience pain or discomfort. eg, if you suffer from headaches, needles might be inserted in your foot or hand.
Other techniques used alongside acupuncture
Moxibustion Heat is applied to an acupuncture point or meridian using moxa (a therapeutic herb)
Therapeutic massage This stimulates acupressure points, opens energy meridians and stimulates the flow of qi.
Cupping Glass cups with a vacuum seal are used to stimulate blood flow and clear stagnant qi.
Most people find acupuncture relaxing and feel calm after a treatment. You may feel a little tired or sleepy and should refrain from vigorous exercise after treatment and, ideally, give yourself time to rest.
